CHINA: China Syphilis Infections Up 30 Percent Each Year: Report
The number of syphilis infections in China is growing by 30 percent each year, state media reported recently. The STD is now one of the country’s top five infectious diseases after being almost eradicated 50 years ago, according to a ministry of health representative quoted in China Daily. In May alone, China had 32,000 new syphilis infections and two deaths attributed to the disease, the newspaper said. The number of congenital syphilis cases per 100,000 newborns rose from seven to 57 between 2003 and 2008, the report said. The state media report follows an article in the May New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) that chronicles how syphilis has become a “major scourge lurking in the shadows†in China. “No other...

MINNESOTA: In Sudden Reversal, STD Rates Drop Across Minnesota
New cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis dropped a total of 5 percent last year in Minnesota, new state data show. Nonetheless, new HIV cases rose suddenly by 13 percent, the greatest increase in 17 years; men who have sex with men (MSM) comprised 89 percent of primary/secondary syphilis cases among males; and the number of people co-infected with syphilis and HIV grew. Health officials could not predict whether the drop in the three STDs is a turnaround or a one-year blip. “But we are encouraged by this apparent decrease,†said Allison LaPointe, surveillance coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Health. Some officials cited aggressive partner notification, testing, treatment, and education outreach programs for the decline. Minneapolis for the past six years has offered...

UNITED STATES: Frequent Testing of Highly Sexually Active Gay Men Is Required to Control Syphilis
In the developed world, the incidence of syphilis among gay men has been increasing substantially. The authors developed an individual-based mathematical model describing syphilis transmission in a gay male population. They then used that model to simulate the anticipated relative impact of several screening and treatment interventions, targeting different at-risk groups with various coverage rates, frequency rates, and follow-up schedules. Increasing the proportion of gay men who undergo testing each year would have “a relatively modest impact on syphilis incidence,†the model predicted. “However, increasing the frequency of testing can have a large impact, with the prevalence of syphilis reduced substantially if individuals are tested every three months,†according to the study....

UNITED STATES: More US Babies Born with Syphilis, Report Finds
An analysis of national surveillance data shows the number of congenital syphilis (CS) cases reported in the United States increased during 2005-2008, with cases in the South accounting for nearly all of the uptick, CDC announced Thursday. “After declining for 14 years, the CS rate among infants aged less than one year increased 23 percent, from 8.2 cases per 100,000 live births in 2005 to 10.1 during 2008,†CDC researchers reported. “That increase followed a 38 percent increase in the P&S [primary and secondary syphilis] rate among females aged greater than or equal to 10 years from 2004 to 2007. “During 2005-2008, CS rates increased primarily in the South (from 9.6 per 100,000 live births to 15.7) and among infants born to black mothers (from 26.6 per 100,000 live births to 34...

IOWA: Polk Health Officials Report Cluster of Syphilis Cases
The Polk County Health Department has confirmed six cases of syphilis in the past six weeks, approximately as many cases as the agency reports in a typical year. Investigators are looking for links among the cases, said Sandra Scholten, a nurse practitioner with the department. “One of the reasons we’re a little concerned is we can’t pin it back to one source,†she said. People who have sex with multiple, anonymous partners are at highest risk of infection, Scholten said. The health department is offering free syphilis tests to county residents who think they may have been exposed to the STD; telephone 515-286-3798. Residents of other counties should contact their local health department. [Article source: http://...
