Maintain the Weight

With the holidays here and all the parties and family gatherings, many of us worry about gaining weight. This year let’s forget that and make Maintain the Weight our new mantra.  Enjoy your parties and favorite treats that you love and are special this time of year.

Here’s a few ideas that we’ve all heard before and one I recently heard about and want to share with you, it’s called an Alternating Fasting Diet.

Before you head out, have a low calorie snack such as a piece of fruit or vegetables. Then when you get to the party you’ll be able to hold out for those favorite foods and you won’t mindlessly eat because you’re hungry.

Plan on eating less during the day of your party so the extra calories you eat at the party won’t have much of an effect on your total daily calories for the day.  Which leads me to this……

I read about an alternating fasting diet that may also help you Maintain the Weight during the holidays. It allows to eat what you want every other day. Some scientist have been studying this way of eating to help people lose weight and to fight disease.

The studies have found that most people can stick to their diets when they can eat whatever they want, half the time. So on fast days you eat around 500 calories. Then on non-fast days you can eat whatever you like.  People who have done this have lost from 1.5 to 3 lbs. a week. Once you reach your goal you should increase your fasting day calories to 1,000 a day.

Now you must be sure that on fasting days you eat foods that are nutritious. For best results you should eat your main meal of around 400 calories, for lunch or dinner.  Then a 100 calorie snack during the day.

Every morning I have warm water with lemon followed by apple cider vinegar with a few drops of orange essential oil and then green tea. The water not only helps to fill me up but these are diuretics whiMaintain the Weightch help rid my body of excess water.   This has been my morning routine for more years than I care to say.

I have also read, that eating this way is good for your overall health.  Diabetes (blood sugars and triglycerides dropped up to 10%), heart disease (it’s lowered cholesterol), cognitive decline and possibly cancer (slowing the growth of malignancies) have all shown improvement.  Be sure to check with your doctor before making any lifestyle change or trying this or any other diet.

I love a nice big salad with tuna or chicken and some feta cheese with low fat dressing or try one of these delicious, easy, low cal recipes.

It may take up to 2 weeks to get use to eating this way but you will become less hungry on your fasting days. Remember, if you get hungry, drink water.  Many times it’s not hunger we’re feeling, it’s our bodies telling us we need to hydrate.

On your alternate eating day, chances are you won’t overeat.  Many people consumed around 110% of their normal calories.  This is OK because if you look at your total 2 day caloric intake of fasting and eating, you’re now around 68% of what you were eating before.  This will help you to safely and steadily lose weight and not feel deprived.

If you want to speed up your weight loss, add exercise.  You can (and should) do this on both days but I suggest that on your fasting day, you exercise before you eat.  You may feel hungry after exercising and this way you’ll be able to satisfy yourself with a delicious meal.
