Cooking Oils, when are they no longer healthy

What cooking oils do you use?

Do you know which cooking oils are healthy for you?  Did you know that Olive Oil is not the only healthy oil you can buy?  Try Sunflower and Safflower Oils which also provide heart-protecting benefit. They also cost less and have a higher smoke point.

If you’re cooking and the oil smokes, get rid of it. Clean the pan and start again with a lower heat. When the oil smokes, it has been damaged and cancer causing properties have potentially formed.

Smell your oils and if they smell rancid throw them out.  They will not make you sick immediately but they contain harmful free radicals that have been associated with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, digestion distress, deplete the body of vitamins E and B and other conditions.

Don’t take a chance just toss it.  If you don’t use oils much, buy smaller quantities so you don’t have to worry about them going rancid.  The ones that go bad quickly are unsaturated oils such as olive, canola, peanut, and vegetable oil.

Store your oil in a dark, cool place especially after opening.  Unopened oil can stay good for 2-6 months. Rancid oils also smoke quicker at a lower heat.

Check out your favorite oils below and that they can handle the heat.
